Abstract

Cyanogenic glycosides in cassava roots and leaves can be indirectly harmful if presented at high concentrations because they are transformed into cyanide which is toxic to humans. Low cyanogenic potential should be added in breeding programs for food security in the future to reduce any bitter taste and to reduce intoxication in cases of consumption of improper processed roots. This experiment investigated the effects of genotype, plant age, soil moisture and interactions of these factors on the content of cyanogenic glycosides in both the roots and leaves of cassava and on other agronomic traits indicating plant growth. The experiment was established using a factorial randomized complete block design with three replications containing two varieties, two soil moisture conditions and three plant harvesting periods. The varieties chosen for this experiment—Hanatee (HNT) and Kasetsart 50 (KU50)—were different in cyanogenic potential. Plants were harvested at 4, 5, and 6 months after planting (MAP). The drought-stressed group was subjected to drought from 3 to 4 MAP and was irrigated at 5 mm d-1 from 4 to 5 MAP and then was subjected to drought again from 5 to 6 MAP; The well-irrigated group was irrigated at 5 mm.d-1 for the whole experiment. The results showed that root cyanogenic glycosides levels , as presented in the form of total free cyanide, were high under drought stress and a difference between the content of root cyanogenic glycosides of HNT and KU50 could occur under drought stress. However, drought stress caused a reduction in plant growth including root yield, and re-watering for 1 mth was not enough to recover cassava growth significantly.

Abstract

This research is to develop a car handling durian with minimum mechanical damage. The car consists of structure modified from typical motortricycle, two cylinder, 24 Hp, diesel engine, pick-up gear system, a single front wheel, reartandem wheel, 130 cm x 220 cm carrying platform. The car whose no-load weight is 575 kilogram can carry two standard wooden bins of durian. Testing in both simulated and real orchard showed that the car worked well when carrying 900 kilogram weight at the speed of 15.4 kilometer/hr. on a road and 8.8 kilometer/hr. in the orchard. Fuel consumption was 0.93 litre/hr.

Abstract

This study was to find out information characterizing the status of young coconut fruit production for fresh market consumption. By means of questionnaires, data were collected from interviews amongst wholesalers, young coconut fruit dehuskers from 4 big wholesale markets of Thailand. These are Paklong-talad (Bangkok), Mahanak (Bangkok), See-mum-mueng (Prathumtanee) and Odion (Nalirnpathom). The questionnaire consisted of principal criteria, ie. Post harvest operations dehusking young coconut fruit, dehusking wage, fruit cost, wholesaling amount, dehusking capacity, popular variety of young coconut fruit, desired specifications of dehusking machine. Finding showed that young coconut fruit possessed physical components, juice : flesh : shell : husk =18 :8 :8 :68%, respectively. 47% of entire 47 shops from the 4 markets answered the questionnaires. Daily sale of the young coconut were 1,680 fruits of each shop in Paklong-talad, 1,117 fruits by average of each shop in Mahanak market, 2,344 fruits of each shop in See-mum-mueng market and 800 fruits for each dealer in Odion market in Nakornpatham. Manual dehusking capacity was 45.3 seconds/ fruit/ person by average. The most popular fruit variety is Namhom. Young coconut fruit before dehusking coasted from 2.50-4.00 baht while price after dehusking turned to range from 5.50 to 7.50 baht/fruit. Dehusking cost was about 0.50-0.60 baht/fruit. The wholesaler demanded a dehusking machine with the price of not more than 50,000 baht per unit.

Abstract

This research is to find mechanism to pack tangerine mechanically. The prototype consists of 3 parts, conveyor, feeder and packer. There are 3 conveyors two of which are identical and made of 3-inch wide conventional belt travelling horizontally. They are 50 cm. wide and 122 cm. long. The third conveyor moving vertically is 50 cm. wide and 64 cm. long. The feeder holding 100 kg. tangerine is inclined, made of steel and lined by sponge. The packer receiving tangerine from the feeder semiautomatically fills up the empty basket. Performance test results the prototype can pack 853.3 kilogram of tangerine per hour with the damage of 2.4%.
